HEALTHCARE NEEDS ALL OF US

DYK? Nationally, almost 20% of essential caregivers and providers in hospitals, nursing homes and home and community-based care were born outside of the United States. Most are US citizens, but almost a million hold other legal work permissions.

Yet right now, we are witnessing one of the largest efforts of de-documentation in U.S. history. Efforts to strip legal status from people who have lived and worked lawfully in the U.S. for years, some even decades, include the cancellation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for more than 300,000 long-term U.S. residents from Haiti, many of whom work in healthcare, and the imminent cancellation of TPS for hundreds of thousands more from other countries. DACA renewal application delays are causing Dreamers to fall out of lawful status and lose their jobs at no fault of their own. New travel restrictions and country bans have caused severe disruptions in placements for resident doctors in rural and other underserved areas.

These unnecessary and unjustified actions are not only harming dedicated caregivers and providers, they are stripping healthcare access from Americans who depend on their care.

During the Coronavirus pandemic, Americans banged pots and pans and clapped to honor the healthcare workers who risked their lives every day to care for the sick and vulnerable. Now, in the face of a growing crisis, we need to speak out again.

On September 24, we will demand Congress take action to protect healthcare workers and the patients, residents, and clients they serve. Join us to make our message clear: Healthcare Needs All of Us!

Make sure your representative is signed on to the Dream and Promise Act discharge petition that would force a floor vote. The Dream and Promise Act would provide a pathway to citizenship for longtime residents like Dreamers and people who qualified for TPS. We need 218 members of Congress to sign on. See if your representative signed. If they have, thank them! If not, urge them to take action now.

ABOUT US & OUR DEMANDS

Healthcare Needs All of Us is a campaign that aims to unite and mobilize healthcare workers, providers, patients, and allies to advocate for the dignity and respect that every family deserves.

Our campaign is committed to advancing policies that keep families safe and healthy by calling on Congress to take action to protect both healthcare workers and the patients, residents, and clients we serve by:

Immediately restoring legal status for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders and other immigrants, including by enacting the Senate bill to extend TPS for Haitians (S 4814).
Enact a path to citizenship for all immigrants who have lived in the U.S. for many years and meet other basic requirements (S. 2468/ HR 4696) and immediately create a path to citizenship for Dreamers and TPS holders by passing the Dream and Promise Act.
End discriminatory travel bans and processing delays preventing qualified immigrants from continuing to work lawfully or reaching the United States.
Claw back money being used for excessive and cruel deportation operations and use it to restore federal health care cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act.
